What Google's AI Mode means for your traffic

Google's AI Mode answering a search with a summary above the traditional links, an illustration for what AI Mode and AI Overviews mean for website traffic

Google is answering more searches before anyone clicks a link. That changes what traffic you can expect, and it changes what your website is for.

If you have looked at your search numbers lately and felt like the clicks don’t match the rankings anymore, you are not imagining it. Google’s AI Mode and its AI Overviews now sit at the top of a growing share of results, summarising the answer right there on the page. People read the summary and move on. The ranking still exists; the click does not always follow.

What is actually changing

Two shifts are happening at once. AI Overviews, the summary boxes, appear on more and more searches and pull the answer up above the blue links. And AI Mode, a fuller conversational search experience, lets people ask and refine questions without leaving Google at all. Both are built to satisfy the search on the spot rather than send you somewhere.

The effect on clicks is real and measurable. Analysis by SISTRIX found that when an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate for the number one organic result drops from roughly 27 percent to around 11 percent.2 That is most of your top-position traffic, gone to a summary. The same trend is why Google has been folding its ads into this world too, moving Dynamic Search Ads over to AI Max and running ads inside AI Overviews on a large and growing share of those results.13

The part that should give you hope

Here is what gets missed in the panic. The AI isn’t inventing its answers from nowhere. It reads the web, and it mostly reads the same pages that already rank. Studies of AI Overviews have found that the large majority cite at least one source from the organic top 20, which means solid search fundamentals are still the entry price to being in the answer at all.2 You are not locked out. The game moved from “rank a page and win the click” to “be one of the sources the answer is built from.”

I keep coming back to how much this rewards the boring, durable work. A clear page that actually answers the question, structured so a machine can read it, on a site that is consistent and trustworthy, is exactly what gets pulled into an AI answer. That is the same thing we argued in why you can’t borrow authority in AI search anymore: the AI trusts sources it can verify, not the loudest marketing.

What this means for your traffic

Be honest with yourself about which of your pages exist mainly to answer a quick question. Definitions, simple how-tos, opening-hours-style facts, these are the pages most likely to lose clicks to an AI summary, because the summary can fully answer them. Pages that require judgement, comparison, a quote, a decision or a human, those still pull people through, because a paragraph of AI text can’t finish the job. Your traffic doesn’t vanish evenly; it thins at the top of the funnel and holds where intent is real.

So the response is not to write more thin answer pages. It is to make sure the pages that do matter are the clearest, best-structured, most trustworthy version of that answer on the web, and to build the kind of brand an AI names when someone asks it for a recommendation.

What to do about it

  1. Keep the fundamentals, because they are the entry ticket. If the AI mostly cites the organic top 20, then ranking well is still how you get into the answer. Our AI search optimization guide is the how-to, and if AEO, GEO and SEO still blur together, this piece untangles them.
  2. Answer questions directly and structure them clearly. Lead a page with a plain, quotable answer, use real headings, add FAQs, and mark up your content so a machine can lift the right sentence. You are writing to be extracted now, not only to be read.
  3. Build brand and trust signals off your own site. Consistent business details, real reviews, and mentions on sources the AI already trusts make you the name it reaches for. This is brand equity doing SEO’s job.
  4. Measure impressions and citations, not just clicks. As clicks flatten, being seen and named in AI answers becomes its own kind of visibility. Judge the channel by whether you show up in the answer, not only by the sessions that follow.
  5. Assume the ads are moving here too. With AI Max and ads inside AI Overviews, the paid side is following the same shift. If you run Google Ads, our breakdown of what Google AI Max means for your campaigns is worth ten minutes.

The short version

AI Mode and AI Overviews are taking the easy clicks and keeping them on Google. That is real, and pretending otherwise won’t help. But the same systems still build their answers from the pages that rank and the brands they trust, so the work that wins is the durable kind: be genuinely useful, be clearly structured, be trustworthy, and be the source worth citing. The businesses that treat their website as the thing an AI reads, rather than only the thing a person clicks, are the ones that will still be found.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, where you can ask a question and refine it in follow-ups without leaving the results page, getting an AI-generated answer built from across the web. Alongside it, AI Overviews are the summary boxes that appear above the traditional blue links on many searches. Both are designed to answer the query on the spot rather than send you to a website.

Is AI Mode killing website traffic?

It is reducing clicks on some searches, not all. SISTRIX analysis found the number one result's click-through rate falls from about 27 percent to around 11 percent when an AI Overview appears, so top-of-funnel and simple-answer pages lose the most. Pages that require a decision, a comparison, a quote or a human tend to hold their traffic, because a short AI summary can't finish those jobs.

How do I get my site into Google's AI answers?

Rank well and be easy to extract. The large majority of AI Overviews cite at least one source from the organic top 20, so strong SEO fundamentals are the entry price. On top of that, lead pages with a clear, quotable answer, use real headings and FAQs, add structured data, and build brand trust signals like consistent business details and real reviews so the AI treats you as a source worth citing.

Does SEO still matter with AI Mode?

Yes, arguably more, but the target moved. You're no longer only trying to win a click from a ranking; you're trying to be one of the sources the AI answer is built from, which still depends on ranking in the organic results the AI reads. Clear, well-structured, trustworthy content is what gets pulled into answers, so the fundamentals are the entry ticket rather than the whole game.

Should I stop creating content because of AI Overviews?

No, but change what you create. Thin pages that only answer a quick factual question are the most exposed, because an AI summary can fully replace them. Content that carries judgement, comparison, local specifics, proof or a clear next step still earns clicks and still gets cited. Make fewer, better, genuinely useful pages rather than more thin ones.

How should I measure success now that clicks are dropping?

Add visibility measures to your click measures. Track whether you appear and get named in AI answers and AI Overviews, watch impressions alongside sessions, and tie real business outcomes like leads and calls back to the pages that drive them. As the easy clicks move onto Google, being the cited source becomes its own form of reach, and judging the channel on clicks alone will understate it.
